Helena Zahara has been teaching Raks Sharki or Oriental Danse since 1980.  She is of Lebanese decent and has three generations of current professionals in the family.  They include Jetelia, Zbeide, Nanoora and Sofilia.  Much of her dance technique originated with Francis Haddad, better know as Vina. 

Helena has made a life long study of dance that includes, Tap, Ballet, Modern, Jazz Expressive, Flamingo, Hula, Country, Ballroom, Salsa, Folk and Certified Aerobics.

Helena will be articulating a combination steps for Balady, Chifti Saidi, and 9/8.   Get feel for rhythm it is the pattern and duration that is phenomenally present in all music.

Helena is the director of Troupe Jamileh Malika.  This group shares the therapeutic values of seeking the goddess within each woman.  There is a unique spirituality in  our movement and meditative dance that is helpful to women and their healing. This group welcomes women of all ages and abilities.    

Bring either or both kinds of  drum. Come to dance or just to drum.  But to come have fund and learn how the dancer and the drum connect.  It's all upto you.
Selima will be teaching  basic rhythms on the doumbec  and the frame drum.  She will be teaching  techniques that include the four elements of creation: Earth, Fire, Water and Air.  These techniques and elements will assist to invoke the inner goddess.  This workshop will introduce  Balady, Chiftitelli, and Turkish 9/8 as well as introduce a sense of inner rhythm thru movement.

Selima is of Afghani decent and has studied music  virtually her entire life. She has played piano and cello since age 5.  She has studied drum with Layne Redmond and Glen Valez since 1995. 

Selima has studied African dance with Bird Flemming in Kansas City.  She has studied African, Samba, and Afro-Cuban since 1996.

She is available for drum instruction for groups and private lessons.
